Yesterday felt like a massacre of epic proportions.
My company has been hit by the economy. 2,000 jobs to be lost over the next 12 months worldwide, 900 in the first quarter. Nothing like living on pins and needles.
I get the economic downturn impacts business, but the wholesale massacre that is occurring in the workplace at the employee level is maddening. I don’t see the executives giving up their bonuses, salaries or perks while we apply for unemployment and food stamps.
So far, I have my job. But it doesn’t stop me from worrying and wondering if I’m next. I’m a hard worker. My job performance is good. But doing a good job is never a guarantee. Nothing is safe.
But I have a secret. Attitude is key in surviving economic downturns. Even if the angel of layoffs darkens my door, I still have my good attitude, my faith, my family & friends and my dog. This is just a circumstance. This does not define who I am. How I handle what comes my way does.
So I meet each day with a smile on my face, a positive outlook and a desire to make my world a better place. If it isn’t here in this company, it will be someplace else.
